Cruisin’ the coast: SoCal beaches

From San Diego County to Santa Barbara, Times photographers captured the essence and character of each beach — beyond the sand and surf.

They shot Laguna Beach’s coves and beautiful coastline. In Huntington Beach, aka Surf City, the camera was submerged. Then there’s the paparazzi paradise of Malibu, where it’s not about how many people live here (fewer than 13,000), but who.

Farther north is Santa Barbara and its 2.5 miles of coastline. Attracting about 10.6 million visitors a year, the city bills itself as the American Riviera.
