Sept. 18, 1990: During his monthly open house, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley takes a phone call in his office as a visiting citizen, William Gentry, waits.

Bradley, the city’s first black mayor, served from 1973 to 1993 and is credited with building one of the most diverse workforces in government. He died on Sept. 29, 1998.
