Garbage collectors begin tackling Marseille's reeking mounds of trash in the center of Marseille, southern France. Striking garbage collectors in Marseille faced 9,000 tons of garbage that have piled up in the streets in the last two weeks. The FO union voted Monday evening to end the protest because of concerns about "hygiene and safety." City authorities said it would take four to five days before France's second-largest city starts looking, and smelling, like itself.

Today’s Pictures in the News begin in Los Angeles, where Laker Kobe Bryant receives his championship ring before the season opener at Staples Center, and an elderly man is evacuated from a barricade situation aboard a little red wagon.

At the National Zoo in Washington, an 8-week-old lion cub passes a swimming test with flying, fall colors. At the stock exchange in Manila, cabin crew of the new budget airline Cebu Pacific demonstrate their safety routine; Queen Elizabeth II welcomes to Windsor Castle the first couple of Qatar on a state visit; while in India, Hindu women fast and pray for the well-being of their husbands.

In both New York City and Sofia, Bulgaria, zombies take part in a worldwide promotion for an upcoming television series, while in Indonesia, Mt. Merapi has begun to erupt again, forcing the evacuation of residents from nearby villages.
