Kim Novak home from Cannes

Kim Novak home from Cannes

July 10, 1956:  Popular star Kim Novak steps off the train at Los Angeles’ Union Station upon her return from the Cannes Film Festival. Novak, for whom this was her first trip abroad, said she guessed the thing that impressed her most about European men was the hand-kissing routine. She liked it.

Times have changed. Today the Hollywood elite avoid photographers. Fifty years ago, Los Angeles Times photographers regularly covered the stars’ comings and goings. Novak’s return at Union Station included a press conference, with the actress posing for photographers.

The left image was published in the Los Angeles Times the following day. The right image, an uncropped scan from the original 4-by-5-inch negative, was not published but shows Novak posing with her luggage for another photographer.
