UCLA's 1980 win over USC

UCLA’s 1980 win over USC

Nov. 22, 1980:  Bruins’ linebacker Scott Stauch (44) celebrates UCLA’s 20-17 victory over USC at the Coliseum.

The victory was reported the next day by Los Angeles Times staff writer Richard Hoffer:

UCLA, which has long suffered in the deep shadows of USC, finally had its day in the sun Saturday, beating the Trojans 20-17….

….It was the Bruins (8-2) first victory over crosstown rival USC (7-2-1) in five years and all it took was a tricked-up volleyball play that went for a 58-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

UCLA sophomore quarterback Jay Schroeder’s pass to Freeman McNeil was underthrown and deflected by Trojans’ cornerback Jeff Fisher. Somehow McNeil still made the catch and trotted for a 58-yard touchdown.

This photo by former Los Angeles Times staff photographer Martha Hartnett ran the following day with Hoffer’s story.
