Members of Congress and their staffers observe a moment of silence on the steps of the Capitol in Washington for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), who is fighting for her life after an assassination attempt, and the president and the first lady pause after a similar moment of silence on the South Lawn of the White House.

Investors in Bangladesh protest violently when trading was halted at the Dhaka Stock Exchange; in Japan, it’s Coming of Age Day; and in India, a Sikh fire breather performs during a religious procession.

It’s the second day of voting in Sudan’s landmark independence referendum; a festive illumination in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk marks the 1oth and final day of the Russian Christmas and New Year’s holiday festivities.

Flooding in Australia continues, evidenced by a collapsed roadway near Brisbane, and an Indonesian village is covered by mud flowing from Mt. Merapi, Indonesia’s most active volcano, which has claimed more than 350 lives in a series of eruptions that started in late October.

Add stops in France, Germany, Qatar and our very own Detroit, and you have our report for today.
