We begin on a somber note in Tucson, where Christina-Taylor Green, the youngest victim in the Gabrielle Giffords shooting, is mourned and remembered at her funeral.

In the nation’s capital, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial site is under construction with a scheduled completion and dedication later this summer; preemies and ailing newborns are cared for in Haiti by Doctors Without Borders, while in Boston, a snowman on a park bench patiently awaits the inevitable.

Residents try to save their possessions from a blaze in a commercial district in Harar, Ethiopia. In Australia, the Brisbane River peaked, with widespread flooding continuing, and heavy rains cause landslides and torrents of water, slicing through three towns near Rio de Janeiro, killing at least 356 people.

In Italy, Mt. Etna erupts, spewing lava near the Sicilian town of Catania; on the Rhine River in Germany, a tanker loaded with 2,400 tons of sulfuric acid capsizes, while at the zoo in Medellín, Colombia, a week-old anteater clings to its mother for safety.

Stops in India, Indonesia, Lithuania, Qatar and Uganda, among others, complete our report.
