Pictures in the News | Jan. 28, 2011

Friday’s Pictures in the News begins in Cairo, where demonstrations against the government of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak gather strength as thousands take to the streets. We have more dramatic images from the eruption of the Shinmoedake volcano in Japan, which has prompted authorities to raise alert levels and call for an evacuation of  nearby residents.

We have some whimsical animal photos, including a feline finding shelter under an umbrella as snow falls in Macedonia, and couple of  brown bears rough-housing at a zoo in southern Germany. In the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, a five-story building under construction collapsed, killing five and injuring a dozen more; members of a trade union protest in the streets of Cassino, Italy; and a crowded ferry catches fire off Java Island early Friday, sending panicked passengers jumping into the sea. Take a look.
