Jan. 31, 1971: A young man lies wounded after violence broke out during a Chicano demonstration in East Los Angeles. Friends of the man try to wave demonstrators away.

One man was slain by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies. Twenty-five people,  including seven law enforcement officers, were hurt. About 70 stores were damaged or destroyed.

This image by Los Angeles Times staff photographer Rick Browne won first place for spot news in the 1972 Press Photographers Assn. of Greater Los Angeles annual contest.
