The last streetcar

The last streetcar

March 31, 1963: A crowd of rail buffs gathers around as last streetcar completes its final run at 6:14 a.m. at Georgia Street barns. Some of the onlookers had been observing the historic event all night.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority took the last 164 rail trolleys and 89 trolley-buses out of service and replaced them with 300 air-suspension buses.

This photo was published in a street edition of the L.A. Times.

The Los Angeles Times reported in a March 31, 1963, short non-byline story that:

More than 200 mourners gathered at the Greater Los Angeles Press Club Saturday night to observe solemn last rites for the streetcar.

A part of the Los Angeles transportation system for 90 years, streetcars, and their first cousins, trolley busses, were to be off the streets by 6 a.m. today….

Saturday night’s rites were simple.

After a cocktail party “wake,” the mourners assembled at a buffet dinner. A eulogy to the noble streetcar was delivered by veteran actor Reginald Denny….

A lily was tearfully placed on a streetcar model and the mourners took a last sentimental journey from the club to the old Georgia St. car barn.

They returned by bus.

A new streetcar system is proposed as part of the new NFL football stadium. (See the end of story.)

How sad it was to end the Streetcar. 40 years and billions of dollars later the streetcar came back as light rail. It never should have left.
