Technical foul

Technical foul

Jan. 30, 1970: Atlanta Hawks coach Richie Guerin is in a tizzy as referee Ed Rush calls a technical foul on him during the second half of a game against the Lakers.

After the game, which the Lakers won, 102-87, both teams admitted they struggled. Jerry West scored 22 points, well off his 31.9-point NBA-leading average.

Los Angeles Times writer Mal Florence reported the next day:

It was the Hawks’ ninth loss in 12 games and Richie Guerin, the competitive Atlanta coach, was not in one of his better moods.

“Do you think the Lakers played well?” he challenged a writer: “Let’s put it this way. Both teams were bad and they happened to win.”

As for the Lakers defense, he concede that they did a good job but added, “We helped them.”

The Los Angeles Times article did not mention why Guerin got his technical foul, but the Laker Box Score stats listed him with a technical.

This photo by retired Los Angeles Times staff photographer Art Rogers was published later during the 1969-70 season with a story on NBA officials.
