Embattled Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi leads Wednesday’s Pictures in the News as he waves to the crowd before a speech in Tripoli. Kadafi blamed Al Qaeda for creating turmoil in the nation and told applauding supporters that there was a conspiracy to control Libya and its oil. The U.N. warned that the situation at the Libya-Tunisia border was reaching a “crisis point” as more people fleeing the violence arrive in the area.

In space, NASA astronauts Steve Bowen and Alvin Drew perform the STS-133 mission’s first spacewalk as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station.

Back on Earth, a pair of Canadians celebrate after winning the men’s Cross Country Skiing Team Sprint Classic final at the FIS Nordic Skiing World Championships in Oslo. Also, Hindu devotees wait in lines to offer prayers at a temple in Jammu, India; a young gorilla sleeps in the arms of its mother at a zoo in Zurich, Switzerland; and a fire at a Philadelphia building produces an emotional reaction.
