Visit with John Wayne
May 29, 1960: John Wayne relaxes at his Encino home during an interview with Los Angeles Times writer Jack Smith and Times photographer Ray Graham.
Jack Smith reported:
As the star of more than 150 motion pictures in his three decades on the screen, John Wayne rarely has ventured to play any role but John Wayne.
One memorable exception in recent years was the film “The Conquerer,” in which he was cast as the 13th century Mongol emperor, Genghis Khan.
Faithful Wayne fans were startled by the vision of their hero … speaking Oriental wisdom in a drawl as slow and broad as the Rio Grande.
“People wouldn’t accept me as Genghis Khan,” Wayne recalled. “I’ve been extolled as a rough American personality, and they won’t take anything else.”
Wayne should be more at home in his new picture, “The Alamo,” in which he plays the rough-hewn American frontier hero David Crockett….
John Wayne summed himself up this way, win or lose:
“I am six foot four, 53 years old, and I have four children, two grandchildren — and I love good whisky.”
John Wayne died in 1979 and has this bio on the Hollywood Star Walk.

I have always loved this man. I am 57 yrs and have always been a fan. My son and my dad have the same characteristics as John Wayne. Mr. Wayne was such a handsome man. What a great actor!! I think it's wonderful for his family to honor him this way.
