As the first light entered a window above the altar of the 4th century church each morning, Palestinians sought the rituals of normal life, such as brewing hot tea. They used camper stoves or candle wax burning in pots to hot water. Wires overhead hold gilded lamps, which the Palestinians rigged to recharge their mobile phones until electricity was cut off by the Israeli military. Those inside used the phones to talk to family members, friends and journalists. The church became quite chilly at night. In the foreground, a man cocooned in blankets discoverd in the Casanova hotel, which is linked to the church complex. Trips to the hotel were treacherous, as they required passage through a courtyard under surveillance by Israeli soldiers, an automated sniper crane and a reconnaissance blimp.
