Pictures in the News | April 22, 2011

It’s Good Friday and our Pictures in the News feature is comprised of religious observances from around the world. Good Friday, or Holy Friday, is the religious observance of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

We begin in Germany, where members of the Italian Catholic community in Bensheim take part in a reenactment of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.  In the Philippines, nails were driven to his palms of a worshiper during a reenactment of the Crucifixion; crowds in London’s Trafalgar Square were treated to a performance of  The Passion of Jesus; and farther north, pilgrims walk across a tidal causeway while carrying a cross during the final leg of the Northern Cross pilgrimage to Holy Island in Northumbria, near the Scottish border.

There was plenty of activity in Jerusalem’s Old City as Christian pilgrims retraced the route believers say Jesus Christ took along Via Dolorosa to his Crucifixion where the Church of the Holy Sepulcher  now stands. Outside, a Palestinian begs as a Christian pilgrim attends the Good Friday procession, and inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher pilgrims prayed and lighted candles.
