The Los Angeles Lakers won their fifth National Basketball Assn. championship — and fourth since 1980 — by defeating the Boston Celtics, 106-93, Sunday at the Forum. The Lakers won the championship series, 4 games to 2.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored 32 points, including 19 in the first half, to lead the Lakers. James Worthy scored 22 points, and Magic Johnson, named the Most Valuable Player of the finals, had 16 points and 19 assists.

Dennis Johnson scored 33 points for the Celtics; Larry Bird was held to 16.
The Lakers trailed, 56-51, at half-time, but Magic Johnson led an 18-2 Laker run in the first 7 1/2 minutes of the third quarter. The Lakers led, 81-68, going into the fourth period.
