Brussels — Pregnant women show off their painted bellies as part of a campaign to raise awareness about high mortality rates for pregnant women in the developing world. In Belgium, campaign organizers say, a woman runs a 1 in 7,800 chance of dying from pregnancy-related issues, but the chances are 1 in 7 in the developing world.

Today’s first batch of images in our Pictures in the News gallery includes expressive shots from Beijing, where an honor guard member shows his sleepiness; Yemen, where protesters show their anger about their president;  and Brussels, where women raise awareness about the high mortality rate for pregnant women in the developing world.  This just a sample of the photos.
