Shoemaker vs. Pincay

April 3, 1975: Jockeys Bill Shoemaker, left, and Laffit Pincay discuss their competition for the Santa Anita riding championship. With five days left in the race schedule, Shoemaker had 81 wins, Pincay, 79.

Pincay ended up winning his sixth consecutive riding championship with 89 wins. Shoemaker finished second with 85, but had won 17 previous Santa Anita season titles.

During his career, Shoemaker won 8,833 races. He died in 2003.

Pincay retired in April 2003 with 9,530 career wins.

When Pincay broke Shoemaker’s win record in 1999, this photo by former Times photographer Bill Varie was republished with this story “A Quick Trip to Memory Lane.”
