Royal handstand

June 23, 1979: The Angels’ Don Baylor upends Kansas City Royals second baseman Frank White on an attempted double play in the second inning. Baylor’s takeout move was successful as White threw the ball into the dugout and Brian Downing was safe at first.

This play was the Angels’ highlight of the game. The next day’s Times headline was “41,002 Watch the Angels Get a Royal Drubbing.” Final score: Royals 13, Angels 4.

This photo by former Los Angeles Times staff photographer Andy Hayt was lead art in the next day’s Times Sports section front.
