Blasting away in Yosemite’s high country

Each Spring, avalanche and road crews  begin the monumental and dangerous  task of plowing up to 18 feet of snow off Tioga Road, the eastern access to Yosemite National Park.

Tioga Road — California Highway 120 — is critical to the small-town tourism economies on both sides of the Sierra. Opening it as soon as possible is important to park managers, too. Most of Yosemite’s 4 million annual visitors come between Memorial Day and Labor Day; without access to facilities and trails along Tioga Road, the tourist hub in Yosemite Valley would resemble the 405 during a SigAlert.

Thanks to the crews that do this, I enjoy hiking in Yosemite every year or two and without the work of guys like this, I wouldn't get to enjoy the good timing of my trips.
