Topping out

Topping out

May 3, 1968: The first residential tower in the Bunker Hill project is topped out as workers put the last steel unit in place. It is the first tower of the planned $60-million residential complex which will have five towers from 19 to 42 stories adjacent to the Civic Center at 2nd and Hope.

In construction, a “topping-out” ceremony is held when the last beam is placed.

This photo by former L.A. Times staff photographer John Malmin was published as standalone art in the May 4, 1968, edition.  This image was also published in “Imagining Los Angeles: Photographs of a 20th Century City,” published by the Times in 2000.
