A bull makes a splash right on top of a reveler as he is chased into the sea during the Bous a la Mar (Bulls to the Sea) festival. The festival is held to honor the Santisima Sangre and the monk Pedro Esteve, who is said to have saved the coastal town from a plague in 1633. The bulls that are chased into the water are brought back to land by small boats.

In today’s Pictures in the News we start off with the last running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, not to be confused with splashing of the bulls — a.k.a. “Bulls to the Sea” — in Denia, Spain, which we’ve also included. More shots of people taking to the water come from Hungary, where a woman creates a splash with her hair. In France Bastille Day is celebrated with military flyovers and firefighter demonstrations in Paris. Also in France, the Tour de France continues through the countryside. More somber images come from Brooklyn, where spectators and mourners watch for the arrival of the hearse carrying 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky who was killed and dismembered by a stranger he had asked for directions. And in China, rescuers and injured people are seen at the collapsed Wuyishan Gongguan Bridge in Wuyishan.
