Amphibious cars motor across Lake Neuchatel near Saint-Blaise during the 26th meeting of amphibious cars. This week, owners of more than 50 of these amphibious vehicles brought their World War II-era military transporters, jeeps and vintage-style cars to Switzerland for their annual European gathering. Fitted with colorful sun umbrellas and decorated with flags, what looked like a motley crew of vehicles carrying families drove off the port and glided smoothly into the water before moving across Lake Neuchatel.

A daring competitor takes to the air in the Freeski Big Air Mens Qualification during day 8 of the Winter Games NZ at Cardrona Alpine Resort in Wanaka, New Zealand; in southern Spain, a bullfighter is a blur as he performs a pass to the bull during their deadly encounter at the Malagueta bullring in Malaga; while closer to home, batting helmets form a colorful geometry in the Philadelphia Phillies dugout before their game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park in the nation’s capital, and first base is bathed in afternoon sunlight before the game between the Houston Astros and the San Francisco Giants in Houston, Texas.

Across the pond, Harry Potter lights up the night sky during an outdoor movie screening along the banks of the river Elbe in Dresden, Germany; amphibious cars motor incongruously across Lake Neuchatel in neighboring Switzerland, and Pope Benedict XVI departs a monastery in Spain to a chorus of singing nuns.

Unrest continues in the Middle East, where Israeli soldiers mourn a comrade killed during an ambush and Palestinians mourn over the body of a 13-year-old boy killed by an Israeli missile strike.

Images from Bulgaria, China, India and Norway add to today’s report.
