A day of lightness at the orphanage

A day of lightness at the orphanage

June 16, 1953:  Juggler Jimmy Val Gray gets audience members to duck during the Fathers for a Day program at the Los Angeles Orphanage. City Councilman Harold Henry is sitting on right.

This photo by Times staff photographer Ray Graham was published the next morning, along with a short article that began:

It was a big day yesterday for 170 small girls at the Los Angeles Orphanage.

They were visited by entertainers and Los Angeles City Councilmen during the sixth annual “Fathers for a Day” event sponsored by the Downtown Business Men’s Association.

There was a puppet show and a juggler, a chimpanzee and a magician.

The youngsters applauded, laughed and squealed with delight as the entertainment was presented.
