Joan Crawford at premiere of ‘Torch Song’

Nov. 18, 1953: Actress Joan Crawford autographs a large portrait of herself as she attends premiere of her movie “Torch Song.”

The photo above accompanied this short Los Angeles Times story published the next morning:

Ranking celebrities of the motion-picture business and thousands of loyal fans last night helped Joan Crawford celebrate the premiere of her new picture, “Torch Song,” at the Warner Bros. Beverly Theater, Beverly Hills.

For the first time in Hollywood history, a premiere was dedicated to just one star. Miss Crawford has been selected as official hostess of Hollywood’s Golden Year Celebration–50 years of providing film entertainment.

The “Salute to a Star” affair, put on with the traditional razzle-dazzle of searchlights, bleachers, radio broadcasts and ropes to contain the crowd, paid personal tribute to Miss Crawford, her 67th motion picture, her return to the MGM studio where she scored her early successes, her return to a singing and dancing role which displays the famous Crawford legs, and her first all-Technicolor motion picture.

This photo was later published in the 1999 Los Angeles Times book, “High Exposure: Hollywood Lives- Found Photos from the Archives of the Los Angeles Times.”

Crawford is wearing a velvet cape that really shimmers in the Hollywood  lights.
