Friday’s Pictures in the News begins in London with World War II veterans taking part in an Armistice Day memorial service. Millions of people across Britain observed a two-minute silence at 11:00 GMT, on the 11th day of the 11th month, marking the date and time in 1918 that guns along the western front fell silent, ending World War I.

Across the Channel in Europe, revelers in Germany and Austria celebrate the start of Carnival, including dancers in Vienna who are also marking the beginning of the city’s ball season.

Elsewhere, Israelis bathe in hot springs near Dead Sea, while Israeli forces arrest a protester in the northern West Bank during a weekly demonstration against the occupation, and Turkish rescue workers search for survivors in the rubble of a collapsed hotel.
