UCLA scores on ‘tuna fish’ dive
Nov. 23, 1957: UCLA’s Steve Gertsman flies over USC’s Willie Wood to score a touchdown after catching a pass from Don Long in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
This photo by Los Angeles Times staff photographer Ken Dare appeared on the front page of the next morning’s Sports section. Times sports writer Braven Dyer wrote this about the touchdown:
From the UCLA 40 they drove to the 19 without a pass, so Long switched and went upstairs. After running to his left he pitched a little dinky push-pass to Steve Gertsman, who caught it on the 5 and did a tuna fish dive into the end zone.
The Bruins won the game 20-9, ending the season with an 8-2 record. USC finished 1957 with a 1-9 record.
