Coliseum Christmas lights

Coliseum Christmas lights

Dec. 19, 1949: Decorated Christmas trees in front of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum facing Figueroa St. are photographed at dusk.

This photo by staff photographer R.O. Ritchie was published as stand-alone art in the Dec. 20, 1949, Los Angeles Times. When this print was made, the area around the star was “burned down,” a darkroom technique that added exposure to bring out the detail in the star.

The USC Digital Library has a Los Angeles Examiner image online of a 1951 tree lighting at the Coliseum.
