Thursday’s Pictures in the News begins in Romania, where blizzard conditions paralyzed traffic. To the north in the Czech Republic, a musher competes in the Sedivackuv Long sled dog race. Stateside, an effort is mounted to rescue a sinking shanty from Lake Mendota in Wisconsin.

In Kyrgyzstan, more than 1,000 prison inmates (warning: graphic content) sewed their lips together to protest their living conditions. Elsewhere, Aboriginal dancers take part in Australia Day festivities in Sydney; Indian girls in traditional clothing dance for dignitaries in a Republic Day parade in New Delhi; and firefighters battle a blaze at Selwyn College Preparatory School in Denton, Texas.

Add stops in Italy, London, China and the United Arab Emirates to round out the report.
