Friday’s Pictures in the News: We begin in Europe, where temperatures fell to record lows across the continent as a week-long cold snap continues. The freezing weather has claimed more than 220 lives, with forecasters warning that the big freeze would tighten its grip at the weekend.

In Egypt, protesters continue to clash with police near the Interior Ministry in Cairo in events following the deaths of more than 70 soccer fans in a clash between rival fans in Port Said.

A rugby player tackles a man who came onto the field during play at a tournament in Wellington, New Zealand; an Indian disaster worker inspects a derailed passenger train in Sathisarapa on the outskirts of Guwahati; and Japanese families participate in a traditional bean-throwing ceremony in Isumi.
