Capturing the world through photography, video and multimedia

"During a wet day in downtown Los Angeles, my camera lens fogged up from the rain and so this shot was out of focus," Mehdi Bouqua said of this image. "Except for a man crossing the street with a big umbrella covering him."

Reader Photos: Best of Southern California Moments for February

Our photos from February seem to have a cold, dark feel in which we’re still trying to emerge from what passes for “winter” in Southern California.

We start with Mehdi Bouqua’s image of a pedestrian in a crosswalk, taken through a fogged-over lens where only the subject is in focus. Likewise with Daniel Schaefer’s image of a magician at the Magic Castle, Chris Jackson’s image of a street performer dressed as Spock, and Betto Rodrigues’s photo of a bus on Venice Beach at sunset.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be February in L.A. without the Academy Awards and Valentine’s Day — the holiday that everyone loves to hate. Toby Hancock’s image of a giant Oscar statue still under wraps lends a ghostly feel to the occasion while  Rinzi Ruiz’s photo of a couple kissing accentuates the holiday with a subtle perspective.
