Another championship — another bonfire
March 20, 1965: UCLA fans celebrate the Bruins’ second NCAA basketball national championship with another bonfire on Landfair Avenue. After a 91-80 victory over Michigan, celebrating fans took to the streets for the second year in a row. In addition to the bonfire, there were reports of “sit-downs” staged on Wilshire Boulevard.
This photo by staff photographer Joe Kennedy was published in The Times on Monday, March 22, 1965. Kennedy also photographed the bonfire set after UCLA won its first championship in 1964.
Gail Goodrich scored 42 points in the championship game played in Portland, Ore.
