Friday’s Pictures in the News begins in California, where Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer of Facebook Inc., rings the opening bell for trading at the Nasdaq MarketSite from the Facebook campus in Menlo Park, Calif.

In Europe, police carry a protester away and have temporarily detained some 400 demonstrators during largely peaceful protests by Occupy activists in Germany; Czech model Petra Nemcova poses during the photo call of “Haiti: Carnival in Cannes”;  and students parade through the streets of Krakow, Poland, during the Juwenalia 2012 festival.

In the theater of sport, America Cup World Series Match-Racing is underway in Venice’s lagoon; Sweden’s Anna Laurell and Azerbaijan’s Elena Vystropova exchange punches during a middleweight 75 kg semi-final bout for the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in China; and an exercise rider and horse are lead off the track after a morning workout at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore ahead of the Preakness Stakes horse race set for Saturday.
