Memorial Coliseum 1927
Sept. 20, 1927: Aerial photo taken at noon of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum filling up with spectators for a speech by aviator Charles Lindbergh. The Times reported that 60,000 spectators attended the program.
The coliseum opened in 1923 with a capacity of 75,000. It was enlarged – after this image was taken – to a capacity of 101,000 for the 1932 Olympics.
This photo was published in the Sept. 21, 1927, L.A. Times, cropped as shown by black lines around the Coliseum. Times staff photographer H.C. Anderson took this image from an aircraft piloted by B.M. Sheffield.
