The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the winners of the 33rd annual Emmy Awards last week.  The Emmys for new approaches to news and documentary programming, the online portion of the awards, go to Time Video for “Beyond 9/11: Portraits of Resilience” and to the Council on Foreign Relations & MediaStorm for “Crisis Guide: Iran.”

Beyond 9/11

Ten years after Sept. 11, 2001, Marco Grob photographed and interviewed 40 men and women whose lives have been directly affected by that fateful day.  “Beyond 9/11” combines portraits with often chilling testimonials to paint a powerful portrait of resilience.

Crisis Guide: Iran

“Crisis Guide: Iran” is the latest in a series that looks at major international issues. It’s produced by MediaStorm and the Council on Foreign Relations.  At a time when Iran is drawing more international scrutiny, the latest “Crisis Guide” examines Iran’s history, its oil-driven economy, controversies about its nuclear programs and more.

The Online News Assn. has announced the 2012 winners for awards in excellence and innovation.

Homicide Watch

The Knight Award for Public Service went to Homicide Watch, a community-driven reporting project that covers every murder in the District of Columbia.  The scope and detail are striking, the combined result of original reporting, court documents, social media and the help of the community.  The project is both a chilling narrative of the violence in Washington, D.C., and a public service.

Occupy L.A. eviction

The Los Angles Times was honored for breaking news coverage of the Occupy L.A. eviction.  The timeline display is a great example of online news delivery, allowing viewers to interactively navigate various types of media telling the story of the eviction.
