Vice President George Bush tries on a sombrero

March 26, 1988: Vice President George Bush tries on a sombrero during a campaign stop at Farmers Market in Los Angeles.

Bush was campaigning in California for the Republican presidential nomination. The Los Angeles Times reported the next morning:

In addition to campaigning at TRW, Bush made an unscheduled morning handshake stop at the Fairfax Avenue Farmers Market. Bush was enthusiastically greeted by the 150 or so people on hand at the open-air market, but many of them were German tourists and unable to help him in the June 7 primary.

Bush received the 1988 Republican nomination and beat Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis in the Nov. 8, 1988 presidential election.

This photo by former staff photographer Marsha Traeger was published in the March 27, 1988 LA Times.
