Monday’s Pictures in the News begins on the East Coast, where Hurricane Sandy continues on its path Monday, forcing the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening to deliver a mix of high winds and soaking rain. More Photos

Violence continued in Syria, where a bomb damaged buildings in Jaramana, southern Damascus. According to SANA, 11 were killed and 20 wounded.  Over in Aleppo, a street of shattered buildings is viewed partially through a mirror used by rebel fighters to keep an eye on enemy positions in the Karm al-Jabel battlefield. In Asia, the Duel of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy at Jinsha Lake Golf Club brought out a very well-dressed fan; a model showcases a creation from a Chinese designer for the KORADIOR Fang Ying Collection during China Fashion Week in Beijing, and a Thai jockey falls while competing in the annual water buffalo races in the Chonburi province.

Stops in England, India, Germany and the Philippines round out the report.
