Monday’s Pictures in the News begins in the presidential battleground state of Ohio, where a voter fills out a paper ballot during the final day of early voting in Lancaster. On the East Coast, volunteers with the North Carolina Baptist Men Disaster Relief group unload one of many semi-trucks full of food and supplies that they and the American Red Cross will distribute to Hurricane Sandy victims in Ocean County, N.J.  With power slowly returning to New York and New Jersey and emergency fuel being rushed into the region, authorities are still grappling with the problem of where to house the tens of thousands of people whose homes are no longer habitable.

In Syria, a rebel fighter claims for victory after he launches a shoulder-fired missile toward a building where Syrian troops were positioned. The uprising against President Bashar Assad started with peaceful demonstrations in March last year, but has since morphed into a bloody civil war. Activists say more than 36,000 people have been killed in 19 months of fighting. More Photos

Elsewhere, sparks fly in the wind as an Indian man prepares corn on a beach in Mumbai; Russian soldiers wearing Soviet Union WWII military uniforms take part in a rehearsal of a military parade on the Red square in Moscow; and supporters of Ukrainian opposition parties take part in a rally outside the Central Elections Commission building in Kiev.

Add stops in Kenya, Greece, Spain and Nepal to round out the report.
