A young shooting victim wrestles with his fears

Davien Graham knew the gangbanger who shot and paralyzed him five nearly years ago; he recognized him as the shots were being fired. That knowledge put the 16-year-old Monrovia resident in a bind. Davien wasn’t a gang member, but he was raised by Crips. He knew that if he snitched on the shooter, he and his brothers and sisters would be at risk of retaliation. He also knew, however, that if he denied recognizing the shooter, he would be lying — and as a Christian, he thought, he should never lie. So he was stuck. Should he testify against the shooter and risk retaliation, or stay silent and betray his beliefs?
