Reader photos: Best of Southern California Moments for October

Something funny happened in October. October looked best in color. While there’s usually a balance in the “best of” photos between black-and-white and color images, this month’s selection is almost exclusively in color. The two exceptions to this are Rinzi Ruiz’s image of a tired-looking vendor in the Jewelry District, and mariachis sitting on a bench waiting to perform on East Cesar E. Chavez Avenue taken by Lenny Lloyd da Silva.

We couldn’t have a slideshow of October images without including at least one of the space shuttle Endeavor on its journey from LAX to the California Science Center, taken by Steve Willard. On the opposite end, we close out the month with an image taken from above the Hollywood sign, with the first three letters, “HOL,” looming large in the foreground.

Other key images for the month include a self portrait by “Jimmay Bones” made by double-exposing an image, and Albert Valles’ image of a light morning mist on Castaic Lake.

Next up is November and we’re finally getting some weather in L.A. While much of the country is mired in winter, we get the occasional rainstorm, and rain is always great for making photos. It’s also a great time to make the rest of the country jealous.
