'Artist's Dream' near Gorman

‘Artist’s Dream’ near Gorman

March 23, 1948: Snow covered valley along Ridge Route near Gorman.

When this image by retired staff photographer John Malmin was published in the October 1951 issue of Among Ourselves – the former Times-Mirror employee newsletter  – the caption reported that Malmin, while on routine assignment covering an upcoming storm, “decided on a scenic shot as a change from the usual stalled cars and snowplows. After hiking around he got this beauty on the Ridge Route near Gorman.”

This photo, titled “Artist’s Dream,” won a feature “best of show” mention in the sixth annual news picture competition sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Journalism and Encyclopedia Britannica. Three other Times photographers also won feature “best of show” mentions in the same contest. All four winning images were published in the May 1, 1949, Los Angeles Times.

The Ridge Route, the old U.S. Route 99, has been upgraded to Interstate 5.
