Stolen Oscar returned to Bill Thomas
June 22, 1976: William “Bill Thomas” Petersen, left, is presented his Oscar by Los Angeles Police Officer Robert Martinez at a police property room.
Petersen, whose professional name is Bill Thomas, won the Oscar in 1961 for costume design in the movie “Spartacus.” It was taken in an $11,000 burglary of his Bel-Air home in May 1976. Two suspects were arrested.
