Dec. 17, 1964: The original Los Angeles Times caption reported on this USC race:
NEW CRAZE FOR COLLEGIANS–Kappa Alpha fraternity men, who were later disqualified when they dropped their vehicle, strain under the burden of a Volkswagen during a race with other fraternities. In “Volks-toting,” the latest fad to sweep USC campus, the driver and an average of 12 passengers carry car 100 feet, climb aboard and race back to starting point. Kappa Sigma was winner in 22.5 sec.
This stand-alone photo was published on the Los Angeles Times Dec. 18, 1964 Metropolitan News section front page.
This photo also moved on the Associated Press wire.
