Michael Todd wins best picture Oscar
March 27, 1957. Elizabeth Taylor and her third husband, producer and showman Michael Todd, celebrate after he receives an Oscar for best picture for “Around the World in 80 Days.”
Large-scale epics marked the 1956 movies and the 1957 Academy Awards ceremony. While “Giant” received the most nominations (10), Todd’s “Around the World in 80 Days” tied with “The King and I” for most Oscars won: five.
Todd married Taylor on Feb. 2, 1957, but died a year later, on March 22, when his private aircraft crashed near Grants, N.M. Elizabeth Taylor and their daughter, Elizabeth Francis “Liza” Todd, were not on the flight.
This photo was published in the March 28, 1957, edition of the Los Angeles Times. It was also published in the 1999 Times book “High Exposure: Hollywood Lives — Found Photos from the Archives of the Los Angeles Times.”
