Friday’s Pictures in the News begins in India, where Kashmiri Muslims celebrate the Islamic festival of Eid-e-Milad, the prophet Muhammad’s birthday, in Srinagar. Thousands thronged the Hazratbal shrine, which houses a relic believed to be a hair from the beard of Muhammad.

Bangladeshi activists perform a street play during a protest demanding punishment for the owner of a garment factory that burned in November, killing 112 workers. Protesters also want compensation for the victims’ families, dozens of which did not even have a body to bury because their loved ones’ remains were burned beyond recognition.

Britain’s Andy Murray outlasted Switzerland’s Roger Federer during their men’s singles semifinal match at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.

Elsewhere, a medical student takes part in carnival to mark Students Day in the southern Russian city of Stavropol; Matt Gone poses before the opening of the Expotattoo Venezuela 2013 in Caracas; and barbed wire is covered with ice crystals silhouetted against the rising sun in Hanover, Germany.
