Phoenix — Phoenix police SWAT team members prepare to enter the home of a suspected gunman who hours earlier had opened fire at an office building, killing one person and wounding two others. The shooting set off a manhunt that led authorities to surround his house for several hours before discovering he wasn't there. Police continued to search for 70-year-old Arthur Douglas Harmon.

San Diego — Several rooms were heavily damaged and two people were critically burned in an explosion Wednesday in a San Diego motel room that was being used as a lab to extract hashish oil from marijuana, officials said. A 20-year-old woman and 21-year-old man were using butane as a heat source in the process when the man lit a cigarette, causing the explosion, officials said. Walls collapsed and windows were blown out of several rooms in the three-story Heritage Inn motel in the Ocean Beach area. A man staying in an adjacent room was injured by flying debris.

Lagos, Nigeria — Airport operations continue as workers dismantle an abandoned aircraft at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Nigerian aviation officials have begun trying to remove the hulks of an estimated 65 abandoned airplanes from airports around the country, with at least 13 at Lagos' international airport.

Allahabad, India — Men of the Juna Akhara Hindu sect stand naked while participating in a ceremony during the Maha Kumbh festival in which they ritually rid themselves of worldly ties and dedicate themselves to being Naga, or naked holy men.
