Sea gulls visit battleship Wisconsin
Dec. 25, 1945: Hundreds of sea gulls swoop on the battleship Wisconsin anchored in Los Angeles Harbor.
The battleship Wisconsin was one of many vessels crowding Los Angeles/Long Beach harbors at the end of World War II. The Dec. 18, 1945, Los Angeles Times reported 20 vessels arriving daily bringing veterans home from the war.
On Christmas Day, the Wisconsin crew brought family and friends aboard for a noon turkey dinner. Santa Claus arrived on one of the ship’s Kingfisher scout seaplanes.
This photo was published in the Dec. 26, 1945, Los Angeles Times. The original caption speculated the sea gulls were “clamoring for scraps from Christmas dinner.”
