Friday’s Pictures in the News begins in Russia, where a meteor streaked across the sky of Russia’s Ural Mountains, causing sharp explosions and reportedly injuring hundreds, many of whom were hurt by shattered glass.

In Africa, French soldiers check  passengers of a transport truck arriving  in  Gao.  Malian forces have stepped up security around the port and the main market in an effort to stop the infiltration of rebel fighters.

A 42-year-old homeless man from the southern Serbian city of Nis has been dwelling at a local cemetery for more than 15 years, turning one of the underground tombs there into a place of his own.
