A meteor streaked across the sky of Russia's Ural Mountains on Friday morning and exploded, reportedly injuring hundreds of people, including many hurt by broken glass. The area most affected appeared to be the city of Chelyabinsk.

Russians in the Ural Mountains were startled Friday morning as a meteor streaked over the city of Chelyabinsk, producing a blast that injured hundreds, caused minor damage to buildings and temporarily disrupted Internet communication.

Earlier in the week,  Pope Benedict XVI stunned the Roman Catholic world on Monday by saying he would resign on Feb. 28 after less than eight years in office, the first pope to do so in six centuries.

Over in South America, revelers performed during Carnival at the Sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro (more photos). South Americans are not the only ones celebrating Carnival. In Germany, participants jump about during the Springerzug Carnival parade. The Springerzug, literally “jumping parade,” is an interpretation of Carnival tradition particular to Herbstein, Germany.

Elsewhere, Libyan security forces stand guard at a checkpoint on the highway leading to downtown Benghazi, where Libyans are preparing to mark the second anniversary of the uprising that ousted Moammar Kadafi; a man collects cartridge cases at a damaged police station a day after Islamist gunmen battled French and Malian troops following two straight days of suicide bombings in Gao, Mali; people walk by a tank covered by knitted fabric in front of the Museum of Military History in Dresden, Germany; and Will Brandenburg of the United States crashes in the downhill event during the men’s super combined at the 2013 Ski World Championships in Austria.

And …..a 42-year-old homeless man from the southern Serbian city of Nis has been dwelling at a local cemetery for more than 15 years, turning one of the underground tombs there into a place of his own.
