March 2, 1970: Cleave Sharry of Dodge Trophies Inc. of Los Angeles dips Oscar statuettes in layers of copper, nickel and gold. The company in 1970 was marking its 35th year of providing the trophies for the Academy Awards presentation.

April 19, 1966: Actress Julie Christie meets a throng of photographers and reporters at the Beverly Hills Hotel the morning after winning her Oscar for "Darling," in which she portrayed a model in London's swinging '60s.

March 29, 1982: An ailing Henry Fonda gets a good look at his Oscar at his home in Bel-Air with wife Shirlee and daughter Jane. Fonda was unable to attend the ceremony the night before, when he was won his first Academy Award, for his lead actor role in "On Golden Pond," which costarred Jane Fonda and Katherine Hepburn. He died just a few months later of heart disease at age 77.

April 19, 1966: Lee Marvin, left, displays his Oscar at Los Angeles International Airport before catching a flight for London while Smokey the horse, right, goes into his cross-legged antics with the help of Ky Wilhoit at a Glendale stable. When Marvin accepted the best actor Academy Award the night before for his dual roles in "Cat Ballou," he said Smokey deserved half the Oscar.

March 24, 1950: Olivia de Havilland stares in disbelief at her two Oscars while her husband, novelist Marcus Goodrich, serves her some juice. The night before, she had won the best actress Oscar for "The Heiress." She previously won the award for the 1946 movie "To Each His Own."

March 8, 1946. Oscar temporarily tossed aside, Joan Crawford accepts a kiss from Michael Curtiz, who directed her in her best actress Academy Award-winning performance in "Mildred Pierce." Although she was the first star to hire a press agent to mount a campaign for an Oscar, the actress claimed illness and did not attend the ceremony that year.
